Optimising fuel consumption on ships: a practical guide for superintendents
Fuel optimisation is not only about slow steaming. This guide covers trim, hull cleaning, auxiliary load management and how a predictive PMS turns fuel data into action.

Why fuel optimisation still matters
Fuel remains the largest single operating cost for most ships. Even a few percentage points of saving translate into tens of thousands of euros per vessel per year. The good news is that the biggest wins rarely require new hardware; they require consistent attention to the variables that software can now track.
The four levers superintendents should pull first
- **Voyage optimisation and trim.** A ship trimmed correctly moves less water. Small adjustments in ballast and cargo distribution can cut resistance without touching the main engine.
- **Hull and propeller condition.** Fouling is silent theft. Schedule hull cleaning and propeller polishing based on observed speed-loss, not just dry-dock windows.
- **Auxiliary engine and boiler load.** Running the wrong generator online, or keeping a boiler warm unnecessarily, burns fuel that never reaches the propeller.
- **Main engine maintenance state.** A poorly maintained turbocharger, injector or air cooler costs fuel before it costs reliability.
How predictive PMS turns fuel data into action
The problem with fuel reports is that they describe the past. A predictive planned maintenance system links fuel performance to the machinery that produces it: when CII deviation crosses a threshold, the system can raise a turbocharger inspection, a hull-cleaning job or an auxiliary-load review automatically. The superintendent sees the cause, not just the symptom.
What to do this month
- Start logging daily fuel-by-mode and speed-by-sea-state.
- Compare actual consumption against the reference curve for each vessel.
- Raise the first maintenance job from any deviation that exceeds 3% for two consecutive voyages.
- Attach the evidence — photos, readings, analysis — to the job so the saving is auditable.
