Which ships fall under EU ETS?
Cargo and passenger ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EEA ports are in scope, with offshore vessels and general cargo ships of 400 GT and above phased in from 2025 onward under the revised scope.
How much of a voyage is covered?
100% of emissions for voyages between two EEA ports and for time at berth in an EEA port, and 50% of emissions for voyages that start or end outside the EEA.
What proportion of allowances must be surrendered?
The phase-in ran at 40% of verified emissions for 2024 and 70% for 2025, reaching 100% for 2026 emissions onward. This calculator defaults to the full 100% obligation and lets you change it.
Who pays for the allowances?
The shipping company — the registered owner or the ISM company where responsibility has been transferred by contract — is the responsible entity. Charterparty clauses commonly pass the cost through to the charterer, which is why per-voyage figures matter commercially.
Does this replace verified MRV reporting?
No. This is a planning estimate from fuel consumed. The surrender obligation is based on emissions verified under the EU MRV Regulation, so keep bunker delivery notes, noon reports and the monitoring plan aligned with what you budget.
